He is the founder of NVR, Inc. Schar is also known for his philanthropic efforts, particularly in education and healthcare. Schar grew up in rural northeast Ohio and graduated from Norwayne High School in After graduating from Ashland in , Dwight began teaching, and on the weekends, he had a job selling homes.

In , Schar began his career with homebuilding company Ryan Homes, where he headed the company's land acquisition and development efforts in Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana until Subsequently, he was appointed vice-president and group manager of Ryan Homes, Inc. In , Schar founded his own homebuilding company, NVHomes, [ 9 ] which eventually acquired his former employer, Ryan Homes, in ; the company was thus renamed NVR.
